Herniated Disc, Treated by a Top Sports Medicine, Rehabilitation, Spine, and Pain Management Doctor, Serving Scottsdale and Tempe

Herniated Disc

A herniated disc may be referred to by several other names, including:

  • Pinched Nerve
  • Prolapsed disc
  • Ruptured disc
  • Slipped disc

All of these names indicate that a portion of a vertebral disc’s gel-like center has leaked into the spinal canal through a tear or split in the disc’s outer wall. Herniated discs can occur anywhere in the spine, including the cervical discs found in the neck. However, they are most often found in the lower back because much of the body’s weight, and movement stress, are places on lumbar vertebrae.

  • Age-related weakening (disc degeneration)
  • Can occur gradually as normal wear and tear
  • Being overweight or having a sedentary lifestyle
  • Traumatic injury such as a car accident
  • Lifting a heavy object inappropriately

  • Varies depending on location and severity
  • Some herniated discs cause no symptoms
  • Can cause severe pain, numbness or tingling, and weakness
  • Herniated discs in the lower back often lead to pain in the buttocks, legs and feet
  • Herniated discs in the neck often lead to pain in the shoulders, arms and hands

A pain doctor can often diagnose a herniated disc by reviewing a patient’s medical history and performing a physical examination. However, there are times when your doctor will need more information to confirm your condition or rule out other causes for your pain. Those can include:

Imagine Tests

  • X-rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT scan)
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)

Nerve Tests

  • Electromyograms (EMG)

  • Depend on location and severity
  • Over-the-counter pain medications containing ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, others) or naproxen (Aleve, others)
  • Pain relieving medications
  • Muscle relaxers
  • Cortisone injections
  • Physical therapy
  • Bracing for the lower back or neck
  • Surgical procedures

As to efficacy and skill, Dr. Crooks is your coup de grace, the mother lode, and what every physician should aspire to. In other words, without any serious hyperbole, he is the real deal and the embodiment of almost every patients hope, because when he looks at something for the very first time, he really sees it with an unsorted lens (baby eyes): free from any preconceived notions. Furthermore, he’s mature and has this unique and uncanny ability to drill down to the root cause of your malaise…making each and every moment with him an expansive rewarding experience in and of itself.

I have suffered from trigeminal neuralgia for 9 years after failed oral surgery.I have been on every combination of medication known to man with no relief. I came to Dr. Crooks and knew instantly that I was in the right place. Not only was he patient and kind, but he also is brilliant and thinks outside the box. He is devoted to his patients and to restoring their health. We discussed my history and he suggested stem cell therapy. If you live with chronic pain, you are willing to try anything to get your life back. It can make you vulnerable - but once you meet Dr. Crooks you will put your trust in his hands and let him help guide you back to health. Dr. Crooks explained the procedure in detail. He answered all my questions and never sugar coated the outcome. I have to tell you, a week after my stem cell treatment, my daily pain went from an 8(out of 10) to a 4. HUGE difference in my life. And we are still not done. There is still hope for more relief. Additionally, I had some cervical issues that Dr. Crooks treated with an epidural steroid injection and radial ablation. I cannot say enough about this man. If you are reading this I know you are in pain. Call the office!

Life changing is an apt description of my treatment results from Dr Crooks at Pinnacle Pain and Spine. Chronic, debilitating pain, weakness and fatigue diminished my ability to live and enjoy life. After receiving treatment , my pain was greatly decreased, no migraines, strength returned, sleep improved and energy levels skyrocketed. An added benefit from my ablation was decreased inflammation of the optic nerve which allowed my vision to return to its previous acuity. Dr Crooks is very knowledgeable, compassionate and responsive to his patients. His nurse Ramona is amazing and his staff wonderful. This is the best pain management team in the valley.

Dr. Crooks is awesome! I came to him for help with pre-RSD developing from nerve damage in achilles reconstruction surgery. One of the best doctors I have ever seen. He is very patient and will listen to your story with detailed questions, and try to think of the best treatment for you. He helped me get access to an orthotic by networking with other doctors at a lower cost, which is amazing. Hard to find anyone these days who isn't just in it for more charges, more treatment, more claims, more money - I feel like Dr. Crooks actually cares about my outcome and wouldn't try to give me an extra treatment and make money if it would not significantly improve my outcome. I wish I could clone him and make him a neurologist and physical therapist also, I think I would have the best post-op care team in the world! Thank you for everything you have done for me, I am back to work and living life again!
