Herniated Disc, Treated by a Top Sports Medicine, Rehabilitation, Spine, and Pain Management Doctor, Serving Scottsdale and Tempe

Herniated Disc

Overview

A herniated disc may be referred to by several other names, including:

  • Pinched Nerve
  • Prolapsed disc
  • Ruptured disc
  • Slipped disc

All of these names indicate that a portion of a vertebral disc’s gel-like center has leaked into the spinal canal through a tear or split in the disc’s outer wall. Herniated discs can occur anywhere in the spine, including the cervical discs found in the neck. However, they are most often found in the lower back because much of the body’s weight, and movement stress, are places on lumbar vertebrae.

Causes

  • Age-related weakening (disc degeneration)
  • Can occur gradually as normal wear and tear
  • Being overweight or having a sedentary lifestyle
  • Traumatic injury such as a car accident
  • Lifting a heavy object inappropriately

Symptoms

  • Varies depending on location and severity
  • Some herniated discs cause no symptoms
  • Can cause severe pain, numbness or tingling, and weakness
  • Herniated discs in the lower back often lead to pain in the buttocks, legs and feet
  • Herniated discs in the neck often lead to pain in the shoulders, arms and hands

Diagnosis

A pain doctor can often diagnose a herniated disc by reviewing a patient’s medical history and performing a physical examination. However, there are times when your doctor will need more information to confirm your condition or rule out other causes for your pain. Those can include:

Imagine Tests

  • X-rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT scan)
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)

Nerve Tests

  • Electromyograms (EMG)

Treatment

  • Depend on location and severity
  • Over-the-counter pain medications containing ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, others) or naproxen (Aleve, others)
  • Pain relieving medications
  • Muscle relaxers
  • Cortisone injections
  • Physical therapy
  • Bracing for the lower back or neck
  • Surgical procedures

This is my first review that I have written, but I really wanted to help those of you seeking a skilled, compassionate and professional pain management practice. I highly recommend Pinnacle Pain and Spine to anyone seeking pain treatment in this area. I have been to 3 other pain management Dr's in the past and none of them have given me the type of relief that I get from Dr Crook's treatment. He actually listens to my symptoms and reviews my past history. This has helped him to formulate a treatment plan that gives me the most benefit. His compassion and "down to earth" attitude also makes Dr. Crooks very approachable. He answers my questions in a way that I actually understand. As a result, I always have a clear understanding of my treatment plan and feel confident in his ability. I also trust that Dr. Crooks has my best interests and health in mind when he makes recommendations. His staff is also wonderful, they are very professional and friendly. They always attempt to accommodate my schedule, which is so helpful to a working mom. I truly hope that if you are reading this and are in need of pain relief that you meet with Dr. Crooks. I know that Dr. Crooks and his staff will do everything they can to help their patients reduce their level of pain and improve their quality of life.

As to efficacy and skill, Dr. Crooks is your coup de grace, the mother lode, and what every physician should aspire to. In other words, without any serious hyperbole, he is the real deal and the embodiment of almost every patients hope, because when he looks at something for the very first time, he really sees it with an unsorted lens (baby eyes): free from any preconceived notions. Furthermore, he’s mature and has this unique and uncanny ability to drill down to the root cause of your malaise…making each and every moment with him an expansive rewarding experience in and of itself.
